Accessories and their importance

The Importance of Staging Accessories!

Green Apples

What is the first thing you see in this room? The piano? Yes because seldom do you ever see baby grand pianos in your average home. The point I want to make her is in the 2nd thing you notice...green apples! Yes, $3.00 worth of green apples is fighting for center stage with a baby grand piano. Do you really see much else in the room? Nothing worth talking about, is there.

It is pretty obvious what I am trying to point out here...the furniture takes a back seat to the green apples in the entire forefront of the photo and the piano worth $25,000 is no more impressive than the apples. The pottery, art, upholstered furniture, tables, and the lighting take a backseat to a well placed accessory.

Stand at your front door, open it and walk in...what do you see? If you have an area within view that you prefer not be noticed, strategically set a bright arrangement of fruit where you want the eyes to go...it works every time!

What is getting all the attention here?

Square Pillows with a View

The million dollar view and the $10.00 pillows, that's what! The little table is set for 2 so simply and yet what you experience is not the view, not the romance, not the furniture. What you experience is the 2 pillows. They set the stage for style. The seat bench was made of plywood and the table and chairs might as well be plastic for all the attention they get.

What happens here is the eyes head straight for the pillows and right out the window, then back again to the table set for two. Any furniture style or price could be resting right where those pieces are and it would not add any more value to the experience. Romance in the space and a sense of style is what is being sold here.

Again, what do your eyes see in this photo?

Beautiful Corner

An Asian theme is dominant instead of a focal point. Having a style can mean several things but to the potential home buyer, their subconscious tells them that these homeowners have a lifestyle, not just a life. This implies that the home sellers live beyond the basics of surviving and that makes a really good impression suggesting that "The basics of this home have been well taken care of because they live beyond that!"

Any style will do...it does not have to please the personal tastes of the new homeowners but it does have to appeal and not repel.

South of the Border Style...

Accents of Mexico
Another approach to an ethnic look is magnified when an authentic representation of a period or style is present. A style defined by architecture, surfaces, and decor, limit the possibilities of a sale. On the other hand, if a person or couple is looking for a specific style such as Spanish or southwest, they will be drawn to this home.

I would remove all the figurines and replace them with some inexpensive pottery to appeal to a broader scope of tastes.

Narrow rooms can be worse with accessories!

Narrow Kitchen

The big problem with this kitchen is it shrinks as you look at it. It has accessories all over the place! The table skirt is cute but blocks the flow of the eye. The cabinets are the same color as the walls and this brings the walls in even closer.

To open this kitchen up...

  • Remove the table skirt
  • Remove the cafe curtains
  • Remove the wall hangings

To show the kitchen to its best advantage...

  • Paint the ceiling white
  • Paint the walls a light shade of a sage green (extends the eye to the outdoors which is green)
  • Paint the cabinets white
  • Replace the checker board floor with Peel and Stick vinyl floor tiles in a solid color such as sage (extends the eye to the outdoors which is green)
  • Place a round glass top on the wood table to reflect the light and the trees from the outdoors
  • Replace the cabinet knobs with black u-shape handles
  • Do not return most of the wall hangings.
  • Leave the windows bare. Install blinds or shades that can be pulled at night and out of sight during the day.
  • Paint the chairs red, sage, or black
  • Put a low bowl of fruit on the table so as not to obstruct the view.

Color...color...color...too much color?
Colorful Accents
There is a lot going on here...if what you see is all that is in this room and the walls and flooring are light...it says "I love these colors!". It is not boring but it is also not memorable. Remember that the identity of a room should suggest what the room is used for, or could be used for...and in this case, neither of those suggestions are apparent...all I see is color and "this is my space"!

Faux flowers
These faux Proteas are perfect for any table and you wouldn't need anything else.

Colored Vases with Bulbs
How about some simple colored glass containers filled with bulbs...inexpensive and all you need to make a colorful arrangement for any shelf, counter, or table top.

Adding color to a room

Just adding color to a room through flowers and art reaps a high end feel. This room is beautiful to look at and easy to achieve...white slipcovers and white tables with splashes of color!
